Mistletoe rings the Great Fountain Garden at Hampton Court Palace, brightly mustard green among the leafless trees, matching yellow tones with the yew.

The Hampton Court yews are fantastic. A through-the-looking glass landscape mushrooming to the lake, like lumpy crinolines or those decorative toilet roll covers, hooped-dressed ladies misshapen with time.

Down in the Privy Garden it’s like Last Year in Marienbad. Thin cones of Taxus emerge perfectly pointed from the ground, surreal and disorienting in their repetition.
